What is ergonomics?

Ergonomics is the study of people in their working environments. It involves changing the environment (equipment, rate of work and bodily movements) to fit the requirements of the individual.

Ergonomics is concerned with changing the environment that the worker is in rather than forcing them to adapt to environments that may not be suitable to their physical requirements and limitations.

What is an Ergonomic Assessment?

An ergonomic assessment, also referred to as a workstation assessment, analyses a person’s workstation to ensure it is designed to minimise injury and maximise productivity.

The assessments are conducted by an Ergonomic Assessor and assess a number of key factors that can impact your ability to work comfortably.

They look at:

  • Physical work demand
  • Posture
  • Workstation design and the equipment being used
  • Keyboard use
  • Environmental factors such as lighting and noise

What are the benefits of an ergonomic assessment?

We spend a lot of time working, improving ergonomics brings many noticeable benefits, creating a more relaxing, productive and healthy work environment.

For office work that involves sitting at a desk for eight hours a day, an ergonomic desk height will relieve workers from turning or lowering their heads to unnatural positions, thereby preventing neck and back strain.

Typing and other repetitive tasks can eventually result in a repetitive strain injury when they are not performed using an ergonomic computer workstation.

How will a remote ergonomics assessment be carried out?

The assessment will last approximately 45 minutes and will be carried out using the platform ‘Zoom’, which will allow the assessor to view how the employee interacts with their workstation.

Throughout the Ergonomic Assessment, the assessor will provide recommendations to the employee to help them adjust their workstation to reduce stress, strain, likelihood of injury and ultimately make them more content, comfortable and productive.

The assessor will also be able to answer any questions the employee may have with regards to their workstation in order to empower them to use their Display Screen Equipment in the safest manner possible.
