This month all of the staff at Mackin would like to extend their sincere congratulations to Barry Crowley, a member of our team who has just qualified as a Safe Pass Instructor.

Following a career spanning more than thirty years in the construction industry, and with twenty of these being spent as a foreman/supervisor, Barry is now a valuable member of the Mackin team as a Health and Safety Consultant. Having always had a keen interest in Health and Safety, he returned to college as a mature student in 2008 and gained certification in 2009. In 2011 he went on to complete the Higher Diploma in Health and Safety in the Workplace. Barry will now be responsible for delivering our series of Safe Pass training courses.

What is Safe Pass?

All workers in the construction industry, including trainees, apprentices and on-site security guards, must all have completed a Safe Pass training course and possess a Safe Pass registration card before they can work on a construction site.

Employers are required by law to ensure that all of their employees on-site carry one of these cards, and are also required to allow their employees paid time off in which to attend these courses.

The Safe Pass programme was developed by SOLAS and the course contains the following elements: Safe Pass

Module 1 – Site Safety and the Construction Worker

  • Introduction to Site Safety Legislation and Site Safety
    Site Accident Reporting

Module 2 – Introduction to Risk Assessment

Module 3 – Implementing Risk Assessment

  • Risk Assessment for Heights
  • Risk Assessment for Excavations
  • Risk Assessment for Electricity

Module 4 – General Site Safety

  • Site Safety and Construction Equipment
  • Site Safety and Construction Vehicles

Module 5 – Personal Safety

  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Noise and Vibration
  • Manual Handling
  • Personal Health and Welfare

Will I receive a certificate?

On successful completion of the course each participant’s results are uploaded onto the SOLAS Card Management System. The cards are printed and returned to the instructor. The card must be carried on-site at all times and is valid for a period of four years.
